Understanding the Fuel Consumption Label

All new vehicels sold in Australia have a Fuel Consumption Label on the front windscreen.  The label shows how many litres of fuel the vehicle will use to travel 100 kilometres, along with CO2 emissions generated per kilometre travelled.

Both indicators are based on a standard test, so you can compare vehicles on a common basis.  In both cases (fuel consumption and CO2 emissions) a lower number is better.

Because these indicators are based on a standard test, it is unlikely that you will achieve exactly that efficiency when you drive the car yourself, but the relative efficiency when compared to other vehicles will still be relevant.  Actual fuel consumption and CO2 emissions will depend on traffic conditions, fuel ftype, the condition of the vehicle and how you drive.
