CPRS legislation needs to be changed

Greenfleet has joined with key supporters to request changes to the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS) legislation to correct its treatment of biodiverse forest sinks established prior to scheme commencement.

Section 220 of the CPRS Bill provides for the determination of a reforestation unit limit for a reforestation project.  Section 220 (3) is intended to prevent double counting, but inadvertently also limits the counting of carbon from forests that have already been planted, but the carbon has not yet been realised (ie. the trees are yet to grow to suitable size for measurement of the carbon).

While we appreciate the need to avoid double counting when setting the unit limit, if these carbon units have not been accounted for under another voluntary scheme, then this greenhouse gas removal has not been counted at all.

We have sent a letter to the Government, and leaders and climate change representatives of the Opposition, The Greens and some independent MPs seeking some simple amendments to this section of the legislation.

A full copy of this letter is included below.
