Earth Hour reminder - 8.30pm Saturday 27 March
Remember to turn off the lights for Earth Hour tomorrow night, but also use the event as an opportunity to re-evaluate the electricity supply you take for granted.
Before you leave the workplace for the weekend make sure you do the following:
-
Turn off the lights - all of them!
Remember the ones in the toilets and other areas you don't always use.
-
What about those flashing promotional lights, illuminated signs and decorative / feature lights? Surely you can sacrifice them for just one hour - if not the entire weekend. Check out some before and after shots from Earth Hour last year to inspire you.
-
Turn off all equipment at the wall - don't just leave things on standby.
Did you know that the power transformer for your laptop computer still draws power even if you turn your laptop off completely? So make sure you switch it off at the wall (or if you can't switch it off, unplug it from the wall completely).
-
Provide alternate lighting sources if you have a small number of staff who work during Earth Hour (or any other time when the bulk of your workplace is closed). Why light entire buildings when a couple of low wattage lamps could be used to meet the needs of the few onsite staff?
These are just a few simple ideas that can reduce your greenhouse gas emissions and also save you money. Imagine how much money you could save in electricty bills if you turned off all the unnecessary lights and equipment everyday.
Don't think you can do it?
This is Las Vegas - before and during Earth Hour 2009.
Surely if they can do it so can you!
