Recognition for repairing the missing links

Greenfleet and Biolinking Australia have again been honoured as finalists in the UNAA World Environment Day Awards for our work to protect and enhance biodiversity, through revegetation projects combined with the protection of remnant bushland.

This is the second year running that our collaboration has been recognised in the DSE Biodiversity category of the World Environment Day Awards.  Fingers crossed we'll have even better news to tell you in a few weeks' time when the awards are presented.

Ploughshare growth 2011

2011, the International Year of Forests, marks the 6th year of collaboration between Biolinking Australia (Greenhouse Balanced) and Greenfleet.

This collaboration has yielded a rich and ongoing program of landscape restoration and ecosystem conservation, with the protection and biodiverse revegetation of more than 4,000 hectares - including the Ploughshare revegetation project shown above and on flickr.

Between 2008 and 2011 we have established more than 2,500 hectares of biodiverse forest for carbon sequestration and habitat regeneration, and purchased and protected over 1,500 hectares of existing biodiverse remnant vegetation, which is managed specifically for protecting and enhancing biodiversity.

As a result, a significant component of our nation's biodiversity assets are protected and enhanced for future generations with each project, offering benefits to the wider community including the protection of water quality and the mitigation of salinity and erosion.

Trust for Nature covenants ensure the projects secure biodiversity gains in perpetuity; carbon rights on revegetated areas are guaranteed for 100 years via property title; and resourced 10-year management plans are developed for each project.

While our vision and goals are determined by science, and focused by state and federal strategies (biodiversity, water-quality and climate response), we bring a market-based approach to realising on-ground environmental improvements.

Greenfleet uses the voluntary carbon market to fund biodiverse revegetation projects around Australia, restoring precious native forests and recapturing carbon, while improving habitat, soil and water quality, and much more. Since 1997 Greenfleet has planted almost 7,000 hectares of biodiverse carbon forests using this model, including 2,500 hectares in conjunction with Biolinking Australia.

The collaboration between Greenfleet and Biolinking Australia takes this market-based model a step further, ensuring that essential revegetation is combined with the protection of remnant bushland with high biodiversity values, to form vital landscape connections.

We are proud of our achievements over the past 12 months, and the past 6 years, and continue our work to protect and enhance Australia's native forests to improve biodiversity and recapture carbon.
