Greenfleet plants on public and private land in areas where trees are needed. On private land Greenfleet has an agreement with landholders that the trees will not be felled and/or endangered by stock while they are young and vulnerable. This agreement also states that the trees are owned by the landholder but Greenfleet maintains the right to count the carbon sequestered by those trees over their lifetime. Greenfleet then holds this 'carbon bank' on behalf of motorists that subscribe to our program.
On the majority of Greenfleet's plantings we operate a system of planting which utilises Pottiputki planting tubes and Hiko V93 trays. This system allows for large-scale plantings. Trees are propagated in trays that hold up to forty trees in each tray. Once the trees are mature enough to plant they are popped out with a device and loaded into the red kidney shaped hip trays. Each hip tray holds up to 100 trees. This tray sits comfortably on your hip with supporting shoulder and waist strap.
The Pottiputki planting tube is a nifty device that saves bending and ultimately your back! This is used when you are planting on prepared sites that have been ripped by a tractor. The trees fit nicely down the centre of the Pottiputki. The Pottiputki has a beak that opens to allow the tree into the soil. Then you carefully use your heel to fill in around the tree, take three steps and plant another one!
To give you an idea of scale, professional planters can plant up to 2,000 trees per day, per person with this system.
Greenfleet Planting Trailer
Kindly sponsored by Tattersall's this trailer has been designed to carry the Hiko trays to the planting sites. The trailer can carry up to 7,000 trees at one time as well as equipment. We'd like to thank North East Catchment Management for their assistence in designing the trailer to suit our needs.
Tree Guards
School children are taught to make tree guards from recycled milk cartons as an exercise in creating value from waste. This exercise demonstrates cultural change in a gentle way - as children raise funds for their schools, they realise that being environmentally friendly pays. It is estimated that approximately 1 million of these cartons are used each day. This is a huge resource base for students to create value for their schools and protect trees at the same time.
