Before & After - Another successful revegetation in South Australia

The revegetation

The Highland Valley is a pocket of countryside nestled in the sweeping hills of Adelaide. Drive less than an hour south east of the CBD and you’re in the peaceful surroundings of an iconic Australian landscape. In 2003, Greenfleet teamed up with Wellington LAP and Scouts Australia to revegetate 18 ha of heavily cleared land in the region.

We planted nearly 25,000 native seedlings on a private property near Highland Valley, to restore the natural biodiversity and support the large variety of native wildlife in the area. We planted a mix of species native to the area, including River Red Gums (Eucalyptus camaldulensis), Drooping Sheoaks (Allocasuarina verticillate), Golden Wattles (Acacia pycnantha) and Silver Mulgas (Acacia argophylla).

Like all revegetation projects, we aim to restore the land back to its original state of vegetation. This ensures the return of the local biodiversity, which in turn can support native wildlife, surrounding waterways and neighbouring ecosystems.

The results

Fifteen years on, the trees at Highland Valley have seen remarkable growth. We are grinning from ear to ear. These before and after images capture the incredibly positive impact this revegetation project has had on the ground.

A 94% success rate has seen these seedlings grow into a self-regenerating forest with trees reaching upwards of 6 metres. The area is once again home to a variety native wildlife including Western Grey Kangaroos, Adelaide Crimson Rosellas and Magpies.
This forest will have sequestered an estimated 7,700 tonnes of CO2-e by 2033. That is the equivalent of removing 1,750 average cars from the roads for one year.

This revegetation project is one of the 12 forests we created in regional South Australia since 1997. It was 100% funded by our supporters through our carbon offset program and came at no cost to the landholders.

Greenfleet is always on the lookout for properties to revegetate. If you, or someone you know, would like to find out more about how we can reforest your land for free, check out our landholders’ page and get in touch with our forestry team. We’d love to hear from you!

Don’t have any land to spare but would like to make a difference to the Australian landscape? Offset your carbon emissions with Greenfleet. Seeing real tangible results like this forest shows the incredible and practical climate action we are achieving as a community and country.
