Restore Biodiversity, Repair Nature & Protect Our Wildlife

Biodiversity loss is a major crisis impacting Australian landscapes and wildlife. Now more than ever we need to restore biodiversity to repair nature and protect our environment into the future.

Biodiversity Enrichment Hubs will deliver long term and sustained environmental action within Greenfleet’s Strzelecki Nature Link. Your investment will support reconciliation and restore unique ecosystems to help some of Australia’s most iconic species.

The Strzelecki Nature Link

Located on Boon Wurrung Country, the Strzelecki Nature Link is made up of four Greenfleet owned properties in South Gippsland. Once fully restored, it will form a 3.5-kilometer stretch of contiguous koala habitat. By planting locally native tree species, the establishment of the Strzelecki Nature Link will deliver climate action by removing carbon and ensure safe passage for wildlife.

What Are Biodiversity Enrichment Hubs?

Greenfleet has restored legally protected, native Australian ecosystems for over 25 years. The Strzelecki Nature Link is the largest biodiversity project in South Gippsland.

While the overall project is delivering significant climate action and creating contiguous wildlife habitat, the Biodiversity Enrichment Hubs will accelerate the restoration of nature. By planting dense, locally native vegetation, the hubs will reverse biodiversity loss on Boon Wurrung Country in South Gippsland, Victoria.

Up to 40 different species of trees, grasses, groundcover and herbs will be planted to create dense pockets of locally native vegetation. These areas will create critical wildlife habitat, improve water quality, stabilise the soils, support outcomes for Traditional Owners and protect nature.

Biodviersity Enrichment Hubs will:

  • Accelerate the restoration of biodiversity to repair nature.
  • Support Strzelecki Koala populations through the restoration of dense habitat.
  • Support the region’s platypus by improving water quality as it flows into the Lang Lang River.
  • Fund the research and restoration of locally native plant species, demonstrating that ecologically rich biodiversity hubs can accelerate wider ecosystem outcomes.
  • Support the restoration of culturally significant plant species in consultation with Traditional Owners.
  • Grow hope for nature and our climate.

Your Investment In Biodiversity

You can invest in a Greenfleet’s Biodiversity Enrichment Hub from $5,000 to revegetate 500 sqm of native forest. We can work with you to co-design inclusions that deliver business value. These can include:

  • Immediate and long-term content to communicate your direct role in Australian ecosystem and cultural restoration.
  • Lifetime impact reporting.
  • Updates on the progress of the restoration and establishment of the project.
  • Potential engagement activities, including site visits and participation in planting.

Environmental Impact Of Biodiversity Enrichment Hubs

  • Growing Hope For Koalas

Strzelecki Koalas descend from Victoria’s original koala population and are some of the healthiest koalas in Australia. They’ve been impacted by habitat and biodiversity loss so by restoring species like Manna Gum (Eucalyptus viminalis) and Blue Gum (Eucalyptus globulus), Biodiversity Enrichment Hubs will build dense areas of vegetation to benefit this iconic species.

  • Improving Water Quality for Platypus

Considered near threatened in Australia and vulnerable in Victoria, Platypus rely on freshwater systems. The Biodiversity Enrichment Hubs will improve water quality as it flows through to the Lang Lang River. eDNA testing has been undertaken, to understand the status of platypus in the region and enable us to track changes over time.

  • Partnering With Traditional Owners

In consultation with the Boon Wurrung Land and Sea Council, Greenfleet will plant culturally significant species within the Biodiversity Enrichment Hubs. This may include species that are used in practices such as Smoking Ceremonies. Your investment will allow us to continue investigating species of significance to the Boon Wurrung People that can be included as the project progresses.

Ecosystem Types In Biodiversity Enrichment Hubs

Ecological Vegetation Classes (EVCs) are one of the environmental influences Greenfleet considers when formulating project species lists.

Within the Strzelecki Nature Link, Damp Forest (EVC 29) and Wet Forest (EVC 30) are the most prevalent ecosystems. They can be recognised by tall eucalypt canopies and include species that will benefit native wildlife like koalas.

While these EVCs are recognised across the Link, their restoration within the Biodiversity Enrichment Hubs will be at a much higher density and utilise species that wouldn’t be included in other parts of the project. This includes many aquatic, semi aquatic and riparian plants that are dependent on the Hub’s waters to thrive.

Growing Strzelecki Koala Habitat

Most populations of koalas found in regions across Victoria have been translocated from other areas. The Strzelecki Koalas descend from Victoria’s original koala gene pull and their continued existence may hold the key for the future longevity of one of Australia’s favourite animals.

The Strzelecki Nature Link is creating 3.5 kilometres of contiguous koala habitat that is legally protected for 100 years. The first project within the Link is Wurneet Laang Laang, which was planted in 2017 and saw koalas return within a few years.

Greenfleet’s Biodiversity Enrichment Hubs will continue to support the region’s koala populations. The Hubs will include species such as Manna Gum (Eucalyptus viminalis) and Blue Gum (Eucalyptus globulus), which are particularly important for koala habitat.

Another species, the Strzelecki Gum (Eucalyptus strzeleckii), is critically endangered and provides a preferred food source for Strzelecki Koalas. When planted along waterways, are even more appealing to these koalas and their inclusion within the Biodiversity Hubs will support the region’s populations.

Thanks to genetic testing undertaken by Greenfleet, there are known Strzelecki Koalas already living within the Strzelecki Nature Link. The Hubs will extend their habitat further and help more Strzelecki Koalas return.
