Research At Greenfleet's Reforestation Sites

Greenfleet has been restoring protected native forests for over 25 years. With some of our revegetation projects over a quarter of a century old, they are becoming living laboratories with expansive opportunities for research.

    Bioacoustics at Dangerbridge

    Kabi Kabi Country, QLD

We partnered with Ecological Australia to monitor vocal species using sound recorders. Dangerbridge was selected for its proximity to native forest and recent plantings. Monitoring is scheduled for 2024, 2026, and 2028.

  • Nesting Boxes at Strzelecki Nature Link

    Boonwurrung Country, VIC

In 2024, Greenfleet partnered with Thermal Haven to install 48 nesting boxes at Wurneet Laang Laang, the most established part of our Strzelecki Nature Link. Working with Victoria University, the boxes are being monitored to understand the wildlife that are utilising them and the impact being made on the local fauna.

    Understanding Koala Populations At Greentrees

    Bundjalung Country, NSW

Greenfleet has worked with BioLink to monitor koalas at Greentrees since 2021. Initial surveys showed 100% occupancy in forested areas and monitoring every 3 years will track population changes and use of revegetated areas. Anecdotally, koalas are already utilising the Greenfleet trees as habitat and the reforested areas are expanding habitat for koalas from the nearby remnant vegetation.

The Birds of Wurneet Laang Laang

    Boonwurrung Country, VIC

Dr Cara Sambell has surveyed birds within Wurneet Laang Laang since 2017. Her research seeks to understand how native birds respond to different environments including cleared land, farm land, remnant forest, and revegetation sites. Results show that within the Greenfleet forest she is observing, species richness is increasing.

  • Koala Populations In The Strzelecki Ranges

    Boonwurrung Country, VIC

Using detection dogs and DNA testing, Greenfleet, Federation University, and Wild DNA confirmed the presence of Strzelecki koalas in the most established part of the Strzelecki Nature Link. This species descends from Victoria’s original koala gene pool, having not been translocated from other regions. These findings demonstrate the value of native revegetation for Australian wildlife.

  • Insect Diversity and Abundance

    Boonwurrung Country, VIC

La Trobe University studied insect diversity at two Greenfleet sites, Devilbend and Mount Worth between 2014 and 2015. Within Greenfleet plantings, they found higher species richness compared to pasture areas demonstrating that native reforestation benefits all levels of the ecosystem.

  • Soil Quality On Boonwurrung Country

    Boonwurrung Country, VIC

La Trobe University is undertaking a long-term study to understand the impact native revegetation has on soil carbon and microbiome. La Trobe University is a long-term Greenfleet supporter, demonstrating the deeply engaged partnerships that we strive for. Annual sampling began in 2024 across multiple sites, including Glendalough and the Strzelecki Nature Link.

  • Woodland Diversity At Hiddenvale

    Yuggera Country, QLD

Working with Greenfleet, the University of Queensland investigated tree diversity, provenance, and soil treatments utilised in woodland restoration. 120 plots were established within the revegetation area with varied treatments to understand how we can deliver better outcomes for habitat restoration and carbon sequestration.

  • Leaf Litter & Soil Microbiome Study

    Boonwurrung Country, VIC

Working with long-term supporter, La Trobe University, Greenfleet supports a PhD study investigating the impact soil and leaf litter transplants have on biodiversity. Multiple Greenfleet sites are included in the study, including Mount Worth State Park, Arnups Road, Falls Road, and the Strzelecki Nature Link.

  • Framework Forest Surveys Across Greenfleet Projects

By working with local ecologists, Greenfleet is tracking the biodiversity outcomes in the forests we restore. Launched in 2022, surveys compare current species richness to original records to demonstrate that recruitment of species not planted can occur as the forests establish. These findings are utilised by our Revegetation team to guide future site selection.
