Offsetting AI Emissions With AI ImpactCover

AI ImpactCover is a comprehensive solution for individuals and businesses to use AI in an environmentally conscious way. Whether you’re just starting to use AI tools, or already rely on them substantially, AI ImpactCover allows you to compensate for the impact you’re making.

In collaboration with Cool Planet, we established a two-tiered approach for AI ImpactCover: one option for light to moderate AI usage, and another for heavy usage, such as for organisations embedding agentic AI.

  • Light to Moderate AI Use

    • Designed for those engaged in occasional to consistent daily AI use for work, writing, or research.  
    • Covers 0.095 tonnes of carbon, with an additional contribution to support water quality.

  • Heavy AI Use

    • Designed for those where AI is deeply embedded in their daily work with high-volume usage across multiple tools.
    • Removes 0.288 tonnes of carbon, with an additional contribution to support water quality.

AI Use And Water Consumption

One of AI’s biggest environmental impacts is the increased water consumption associated with cooling the data centres that power it. In fact, researchers estimate that AI utilises a potential 765 billion litres of water each year.

We wanted to acknowledge this impact when developing AI ImpactCover. In addition to removing carbon, we’ve included a contribution to plant additional trees along waterways within Greenfleet projects. This will occur at the Strzelecki Nature Link on Boonwurrung Country in Victoria.

Restoring Waterways at the Strzelecki Nature Link

This large-scale native reforestation project is creating over 3.5 kilometres of koala habitat that will be protected through the rest of this century. By restoring the project’s waterways, we will improve water quality, reduce erosion, shade aquatic habitats and build long-term freshwater resilience.

We’re planting specially selected, locally native trees and plants along the riparian areas and have already undertaken baseline environmental DNA (eDNA) assessments to track water quality improvements and the presence of wildlife, including platypus, over time.

Why Develop AI ImpactCover?

AI use is growing and so is its environmental impact. Every time we enter a prompt into an AI tool or use agentic AI, we rely on data centres powered by significant amounts of energy and water.

As Australia’s first carbon offset provider, Greenfleet wanted to offer a tangible and authentic solution for this issue. The first step was understanding the individual impact of being an AI user across a whole year.

That’s why we collaborated with independent Australian environmental and sustainability consultancy, Cool Planet to understand AI’s footprint and offer a solution for those that wanted to offset it.

To develop AI ImpactCover, we needed to work with a trusted and reputable partner. Cool Planet is an independent Australian sustainability consultancy specialising in carbon accounting and impact modelling.

We collaborated with Cool Planet’s emissions and sustainability experts to establish a robust and defensible estimate of the emissions associated with average, annual AI use.

While this is an evolving space, the model is informed by data from AI-providers and peer-reviewed research. Cool Planet adopted deliberately conservative assumptions to ensure Greenfleet could deliver comprehensive climate action for supporters who purchase AI ImpactCover.
