Eco Resort's Approach To Sustainability

Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort is an eco-tourism getaway situated on a stunning coral cay off Bundaberg on Queensland’s southern coast. They have partnered with Greenfleet since 2017, when they sought to manage their carbon emissions while aligning with their sustainable goals and environmental conservation.

Partnership With Greenfleet

Lady Elliot Island’s main access is by light aircraft, and all visitors are encouraged to offset their flight emissions with Greenfleet as they travel to and from the island.

So far, they have offset over 8,600 tonnes of CO2-e through native reforestation.

The Greenfleet project that ignited Lady Elliot Island’s interest is the restoration of the Barolin Nature Reserve on Goreng Goreng Country in Bundaberg. While removing carbon, this unique project aims to protect the local Loggerhead Turtle rookery from artificial lights that disrupt the turtle’s nesting and hatching.

Greenfleet has planted thousands of native trees to assist in blocking the artificial light and improve the breeding success for this vulnerable turtle, while delivering climate action in the region.

Environmental Initiatives At Lady Elliot Island Eco Resort

The move to being a sustainable tourist destination began at Lady Elliot when the current owners took over in 2005. Within three years, a purpose-built hybrid solar power station was installed so the entire island could operate on solar power.

The team are highly motivated to bring sustainable initiatives to the running of the resort, assessing every new product and service on its sustainability credentials.

Another environmental measure on the island includes a large-scale public-private initiative involving the restoration of the island’s natural environment by planting over 10,000 native trees to improve biodiversity. They grow these trees at their own nursery and partner with volunteers to further this work.

The resort is also working to improve their wastewater conservation, reduce reliance on single use plastics and looking into renewables such as wind energy.
