Making Snow Trips More Sustainable

Thredbo Resort has worked with Greenfleet since 2009, wanting an environmental partner to restore native forests, rehabilitate cleared land and protect growing plantings on their behalf.

Partnership With Greenfleet

Fuelling snow grooming machines and buses requires diesel fuel, and currently viable fuel alternatives are not available for these vehicles. As a result, Thredbo Resort is keen to minimise their environmental impact in other ways.

They have now offset over 20,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from vehicles and machinery emissions through their partnership with Greenfleet. This is the equivalent of removing over 4,600 medium-sized cars off Australia’s roads for a whole year.

Visitors and staff can purchase Greenfleet offsets when buying from the Thredbo Online Store. 100% of the funds support Greenfleet’s native revegetation work, allowing visitors to lessen the impact of their resort visit.

Environmental Initiatives At Thredbo Resort

Thredbo is also Australia’s first snow resort to have its major resort operations powered by renewable electricity, and hold Gold EarthCheck Sustainable Destination Certification four years running. They are working on improving energy efficiency, sourcing fuel replacements and litter prevention processes.

Thredbo's sustainability targets for December 2026 are: 

  • Achieve Carbon Neutral Certification for Thredbo Operations
  • Reduce Village Waste-to-Landfill by 10% Over 2022-2023 Levels
  • Reduce Village Potable Water Usage by 10% over 2022-2023 Levels (excluding snow making).
