Carbon offsetting is a simple way to take climate action

It’s a powerful thought to know that we can all make a difference when it comes to our climate and that you can play a part in creating a more sustainable future.

From reducing waste to travelling less, there are many ways that people and businesses around the world are able to reduce their environmental footprint. A simple way that you can supplement these types of actions is to offset any unavoidable carbon emissions.

What is carbon offsetting?

Offsetting is a way to counteract the emissions we can’t reduce or avoid. You can offset any carbon emitting activity in your life, for example, your car, flights, business, or household.

Offsetting emissions doesn’t just have to be about mitigating climate change. Depending on how you do it, the process can also have wider, positive impacts on the environment.

How does Greenfleet offset my emissions?

When you choose Greenfleet to offset your carbon emissions, we will plant enough biodiverse, native trees to capture those emissions from the atmosphere.

In addition to capturing carbon, these forests are also creating habitat for wildlife, increasing biodiversity and restoring land and water quality. Since 1997 Greenfleet have planted more than 9.4 million native trees across 500 forests in Australia and New Zealand.

Greenfleet’s dedicated forestry team conduct thorough research and use carefully selected local nurseries to source the seeds and seedlings to be planted. The trees planted are always native and endemic to the area we are planting in.

These forests are closely monitored for the first five years of their life to make sure they are establishing well. After this, they are monitored remotely and we’ll visit them again as needed following events such as bushfires or drought.

Greenfleet's native forest growing in Gippsland, Victoria. Planted in 2012 and called Whitehurst, there are more than 20,000 trees growing here that will capture 21,000+ tonnes of CO2-e over their lifetime.

Importantly, the trees growing in our reforestation projects are protected for 100 years from the time they are planted. This is so they can reach their full potential, make a positive impact on land quality and create biodiverse havens for our native wildlife. These trees continue to sequester carbon as they mature so protecting them also ensures that they take long term, critical climate action.

What can I offset?

At Greenfleet, we encourage you to reduce your emissions as much as possible as this is critical in helping our climate. For the emissions you can’t avoid, you can choose to offset many parts of your life. These include emissions from:

  • Your vehicle
  • Your travel
  • Your household
  • Your business

Our most comprehensive offset option is CarbonCover 365. It helps you take climate action by offsetting the next 12 months of your life. When you choose CarbonCover 365, your annual offset will cover 23 tonnes of CO2-e, which is the average amount of carbon emitted by each person in Australia. To calculate this annual per-person average, Greenfleet partnered with the staff at the Energy Transition Hub at the University of Melbourne, carefully following Australian and international standards.

There are number of ways that we can take climate action. All of them are important but, offsetting your emissions is one simple and effective way that you can make a difference today for a more sustainable and greener future.
