Biodiversity is a strong priority for Greenfleet as we know that a biodiverse landscape is a more resilient one.
A resilient ecosystem is able to endure disturbances and remain functional which makes resilience a valuable quality in a climate-changing future. This is especially true as disturbances such as extreme weather are becoming more common, like the recent and devastating bushfire season we have experienced in Australia.
Our reforestation projects capture carbon from the atmosphere with the goal to take critically needed climate action. Our focus on biodiversity goes hand in hand with this and means that our forests play an integral role in restoring and building ecosystems in the areas they are growing.
Australia is rich in biodiversity and home to many unique ecosystems. Because of our geographical isolation, we provide habitat for many species that couldn’t exist anywhere else in the world. However, deforestation remains a major threat to many of our plants and animals. The most recent studies show that the clearing of native vegetation in some Australian states is occurring at the rate of up to 395,000 hectares each year.
With 1,420 forest-dwelling species being listed as threatened and over 84% of our mammals being endemic to Australia, it’s up to us to ensure they have habitat to thrive in. While a young forest is no replacement for old-growth, reforestation remains one of the strongest tools we have in taking climate action and having a positive impact on our environment.
Our 10-year old forest at Battery Creek in Victoria has become a biodiverse wonderland.
As you can see, these trees we plant aren’t just drawing carbon from the atmosphere. The biodiversity in these forests provides many benefits to the area in which they are growing. They provide habitat for threatened species, help to purify water, decrease salinity in soils, remediate the effects of erosion and the list goes on.
We belong to an infinitely complex and colourful web of life and every species plays a part. By choosing a variety of native species that are endemic the area they are being planted, Greenfleet hopes to grow the great forests of our future. By joining us, you are helping to restore habitat, sequester carbon, create resilience, clean water and most importantly - allowing life to thrive.
