Australian Light Horse Memorial Park Seymour, VIC

Greenfleet was honoured to be a part of the establishment of the Australian Light Horse Memorial Park.  The Memorial stands on what was the original army base of Victoria (established in the 1870s) and then the home of the Light Horse Brigade which saw service in, amongst other conflicts, World War 1.

The memorial itself opened in 2001, with Greenfleet revegetating previously grazed areas in 2006.  The aims of this revegetation project are to reestablish local biodiversity and to address salinity issues that have arisen from the original clearing of vegetation to create the base.

In all, eight hectares of land, mostly around the edges of the property, were planted out by Greenfleet and Scouts Australia. Indigenous species were selected to represent what would have been in the area before clearing.

This project is growing very well, with very little mortality despite harsh drought conditions around the time of establishment. A small amount of infill planting took place in 2009, and this has seen the site achieve nearly 100% stocking levels.

There has been a noticeable increase in bird and invertebrate life since planting, and the quality of water in the nearby Goulburn River has improved because of the reduction in salt leaching from the site.
